Kuleshov, Soviet film master, experiments (early 1920's)
with montage by cutting a blank faced man with three
different shots. In each case the audience reads his blank look as
having a different emotion according to the shot that follows. What
does it all mean? The power of montage and the fabulous complexity
of picture editing. Fragments, shots add up to bigger stuff. Onto
my wife's blank face we can imprint any feeling we want. In my
case, I see disdain, ambivalence, maybe some disgust, a host of
emotions dredged by movie talk at the dinner table. And I thought
Time Traveling Hairdressers was a great idea.
